The Strada Alta, 44 km long (easily done in three days) begins in Airolo (1175 m) gateway to the St. Gotthard and the Bedretto Valley.
The path follows a terrace above the Leventina Valley, past little quaint villages, hamlets and meadows. The little village of Rossura is particularly notable for its old wooden houses constructed in typical Gotthard style. The church in Rossura, on a hill facing the village, conserves an important cycle of pictures from the fifteenth century. While hiking southwards, the vegetation gradually changes from alpine (pines, oaks and maples) to Mediterranean (birch and chestnut trees). The whole region is rich in mushrooms and various animals: deer, wild goats, marmots and foxes. Opposite Faido is the Piumogna waterfall (a natural monument); its waters originate at the Pizzo Campolungo (2714 m) and Pizzo Campo Tencia (3072 m). In its final lap, the Strada Alta avoids the Biaschina gorge, where vines grow on exposed slopes, but rather continues along the high terraces through Cavagnago to Sobrio (1100 m). The final descent brings the hiker down to the villages of Bodio, Pollegio and finally Biasca (train and bus station). Carlo Franscella
